S is for specific. Don't say "I want to eat better this year." Instead, think of the issue you have with eating healthy (going out to eat too much, not meal planning, shopping on an empty stomach..) and base your goal around that.
M is for measurable. Think "have i had my 64 oz of water today? or my 5 servings of fruits and veggies?" Again, this comes down to having a specific goal in mind.
A is for attainable. Is losing 30 pounds by February first attainable? No. By setting unrealistic goals you are setting yourself up for failure.
R is for realistic. This goes hand in hand with attainable. Make a goal that is challenging, but not impossible. If you work 40 hours a week and have 4 kids, is it realistic to make a goal of 2 hour gym sessions? Probably not. Remember, what looks good on paper, isn't always realistic for your lifestyle.
T is for timely. Think about how your new goal will fit into your life currently. Make specific check points within your timeframe to stay on target If you plan on losing 30 pounds this year, be sure you are on target every month (or every other month, etc) so that by the end of the year you don't feel defeated.
